Guided tours in English

At the mim the doors are wide open for all audiences. An experienced guide takes your class on a journey through the museum.
A general guided tour of the museum collections lasts 90 minutes. Would you rather choose a workshop? In addition to the guided tour there is a moment of musical practice in the Atelier, an interactive activity space that's ideal for fun music making!

Children and teenagers

4-7 year-olds

Discovery tour

The ideal way to discover the museum during your first visit! Throughout the tour, the families of instruments reveal themselves to you: harp, violoncello, trombone and xylophone are hiding in the most secret corners of the museum. All they want is for you to come and find them and enter into their world.

Peter and the Wolf (from the age of 5)

Peter is a very brave boy, so brave that he's even not afraid of a wolf. Even so, his grandfather has warned him: "Be careful, my boy!". But Peter has some friends: the duck, the cat and the bird who will perhaps help him to catch the wolf... After listening to the story in class, you'll discover at the mim how animals and characters can become musical instruments

Special offer: Discover the orchestra (from the age of 5)

Journey into the world of the orchestra and experience an unforgettable musical morning! Firstly, start off with a visit at the mim for a discovery tour of the galleries. How do you play the violin and how is it different from a cello? What does a horn sound like? Do the musicians always sit in the same spot in the orchestra? In the workshop space, the class will transform into an actual orchestra with the help of a museum conductor! Secondly, this little band moves off to the rehearsal rooms of the Belgian National Orchestra to attend part of a rehearsal of this internationally acclaimed symphony orchestra. For real!

This tour is organized in collaboration with Belgian National Orchestra. The tour starts at 9.30am at the mim and finishes at Belgian National Orchestra at 12:00 noon.

Orchestral instruments

There are a multitude of instruments in an orchestra: violins, flutes, trumpets, etc... You've probably seen them all already, but have you really listened to them? It's not easy to hear the difference between an oboe and a bassoon, between a trombone and a trumpet when they're all playing at the same time! Some are in front, and some are behind but there's nothing chaotic about an orchestra. Everything is aligned, just like music paper...

Instruments of the world

A guide takes you into the museum galleries to learn about instruments from all over the world. You'll visit Africa and its talking drums, you'll travel to India and learn how to meditate, you'll hear the Javanese gamelan, and then you'll climb to the roof of the world to admire the giant trumpets of the Tibetan monks. Through Mexico you'll end up in Europe among bagpipes, accordions and bumblebees. And of course you'll be able to play an instrument yourself!

12-18 year-olds

Discovery tour

Discover not only the instruments, but also how to manage and look after them: why does an instrument enter the museum and how does one manage such a collection?
