Musical scores of the Fanfare of Monceau-sur-Sambre

A few years ago, the mim was able to lay hands on more than 400 musical scores of the Fanfare of Monceau-sur-Sambre, a musical society founded in 1874 in the region of Charleroi. The scores were saved from destruction in the nick of time.

This collection is about 15 meters long. The scores have been restored and inventoried, and an initial study has also been conducted by Géry Dumoulin, our curator of Western wind instruments.

Documentary collections such as the present one are of great importance because they combine various disciplines: historical musicology, organology, ethnomusicology and music sociology. The collection of the Fanfare of Monceau-sur-Sambre provides important information on the repertoire of a type of orchestra that has been very popular in our regions since the 19th century. Moreover, its study reveals links with instruments in the museum's collections.
