The mim's reputation is built on its extraordinary collection. With a wealth of more than 7000 musical instruments, the mim is world renowned.
The collections are looked after by a staff of scientists called 'organologists' because of their specialism in the study of musical instruments. Each of them is responsible for one or more separate collections [1]. They are helped by a team working in the workshop [2] for conservation and restoration. Numerically, the larger part of the collection is stored in reserves [2] not accessible to the general public.

The mim is an active member of the MIMO project [4]. "Musical Instrument Museums Online"'s aim is to create a single access point to digital content and information on the collections of musical instruments held in European museums. MIMO is part of the broader Europeana [5] project.
