Beloved Cello

The cello in Arcangelo Corelli's time (1653-1713) and his legacy

Corelli is certainly one of the most important musicians of the late 17th century, not for the abundance of his output, but for its quality, and the influence it had on nearly all his successors. He studied in Bologna from 1666, during the years when the city was a major center of violin and cello development. At this time, the best cellists began to compose pieces and sonatas specifically written for their instrument.

Encouraged by Francesco II, Duke of Modena of the Este family, the sponsor of these early works and who himself played the bass violin, the pioneers of this repertoire explored the limits of their instrument, following the footsteps of the violinists who had preceded them in this undertaking.

Programworks by Domenico Gabrielli (1659-1690), Giovanni-Battista Vitali (1632-1692), Giuseppe Jacchini (1676-1727), Antonio Caldara (1670-1736) and Salvatore Lanzetti (1710-1780)

Coordination: Alain Gervreau
