This concert offers a journey through the timeless world of Johann Sebastian Bach's sacred and instrumental music, in dialogue with the musical legacy of Felix Mendelssohn. It features musicians from the Early and Classical Music departments of the Conservatoire Royal de Bruxelles, bringing together different practices and aesthetics.
The programme centres on Cantata 106 (Actus Tragicus), a profound meditation on the finitude of existence, performed by musicians specialising in Early music. Next, the second Orchestral Suite showcases Bach's virtuosity and instrumental elegance. Mendelssohn's short and moving motet Beati mortui pays tribute to the polyphonic tradition inherited from the Leipzig Cantor. Finally, the concert concludes with the jubilant motet Lobet den Herrn, bringing together all the performers in a vibrant musical celebration.
Through this programme, the musicians explore the expressive richness of Bach and his influence on subsequent generations, blending styles, periods and sensibilities to offer a profound and immersive musical experience.
