Suite n°1 "Fantaisies-tableaux" op 5
"Danses symphoniques" op 45
Rachmaninoff was 20 years old when he composed this first Suite. Each of these 4 pieces illustrates an extract from a poem by Lermontov, Byron, Tyutchev and Khomiakov. The Symphonic Dances, written in 1940, is the work of an artist at the peak of his powers. In the version for 2 pianos, written by Rachmaninoff himself, the orchestral colors are brought to life by dazzling piano writing.
